Unique among the world's resources, water is required by all societies, irrespective of their level of development. Because water is central to the production of food and energy, its availability in clean, usable supplies goes a long way toward ensuring economic progress and improved living standards. However, population growth, economic expansion, and technological change are raising the global demand for water, according to a recent United Nations report.
