The early 20th century was a remarkable period in the history of the United States. In major cities, tall buildings were constructed to house large businesses, and modern water and wastewater systems were developed to improve the quality of life. In the arid West, engineers constructed dams and filled reservoirs that transformed unprofitable and unlivable wastelands into well-irrigated landscapes that enabled farmers to grow crops in quantities sufficient to meet the needs of rising populations.
