摘要

Because of their intensive power requirements, wastewater treatment plants are increasingly seeking ways to use less energy. In addition to reducing electricity costs, such efforts confer environmental benefits by decreasing the amount of energy that must be generated by local power plants. ThernHartford Water Pollution Control Facility, in Hartford, Connecticut, may be one of the largest examples of this in the United States. The 80 mgd (302,800 irf/d) facility incinerates approximately 200 tons (181 metric tons) of wet biosolids each day. But design work is nearing completion on a plan to convert waste heat from the incinerators into electricity, and construction is set to begin early next year on an energy recovery system that is expected to generate more than a third of the electricity required by the facility.
