A "green" energy facility near Des Moines, Iowa, would offer a generating capacity of up to 268 MW using wind power and biofuels in a first-of-its-kind facility involving underground storage of compressed air. The Iowa Stored Energy Park (isep), a $200-mil-lion project that would store air underground that had been compressed by means of wind power, is being jointly developed by dozens of local municipalities in Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas with backing from the U.S. Department of Energy (doe). The compressed air would be stored in an aquifer when electricity demand is low.
