Seven years after unveiling plans for a record-breaking span across the Mississippi, the Missouri and Illinois departments of transportation have revived the project-but on a much smaller scale. Governor Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois and Governor Matt Blunt of Missouri recently announced an agreement to link St. Louis and East St. Louis with a cable-stayed crossing. The four-lane bridge will have a 1,500 ft (457 m) long main span supported by two delta-shaped towers roughly 350 ft (107 m) tall. The long-awaited project, which includes roadway connections on both sides of the river, is expected to cost $640 million.
