As it grapples with the issue of improving water quality within the heavily modified Los Angeles River, Los Angeles County's Department of Public Works must juggle a host of competing demands for increased recreational opportunities, green space, and wildlife habitat. Since much of the landscape through which the Los Angeles River passes is highly urbanized, meeting all of these demands is a difficult feat. However, constructed wetlands recently completed by the county showcase a unique approach wherein an existing, single-purpose facility was converted into an amenity that offers a variety of benefits.
