The German state of Saxony will soon have its first cable-stayed bridge. Set to be completed this month, the bridge is an asymmetrical, single-pylon structure that in traversing the Elbe River a few kilometers northwest of Dresden will provide the first crossing at this location for motor vehicles since the end of World War II, when a bridge there was destroyed. The 12.5 m wide bridge will have two 4.5 m wide lanes and provide a more direct route to Dresden from the cities of Meissen and Radebeul. The new route will also relieve congestion along a heavily used road that runs alongside the river, according to Wolfgang Eilzer, the executive director of the structural consulting engineering firm Leonhardt, Andra und Partner, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Eilzer led the preliminary and detailed design work for the bridge.
