The landscape restoration work carried out on a waste dump in a park southwest of Barcelona, Spain, has won a top prize at the 2008 World Architecture Festival, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, in October. The redesign won the top prize in the energy, waste, and recycling category, and CNN.com reports that the design transformed the landfill, La Vail d'en Joan, from a 150 ha dump into a terraced agricultural landscape. An underground drainage system filters contaminated waste fluids, and a portion of the water reclaimed from the fluid is used to irrigate the park. As an added benefit, biogas produced by the dump is collected for use in creating electricity. The landfill was in use for more than 30 years before being closed in 2006, and it is estimated that more than 20 million metric tons of rubbish is now buried there. The design was created by Battle Roig Arquitectos, of Esplugues de Llobre-gat, Spain.
