In India, a country where the commercial aviation industry is growing at an astonishing rate, one might expect an airport expansion project to focus solely on increasing capacity. Instead, the designers of a new terminal at Chennai International Airport are aiming not only for growth but also for sustainability. Ultimately, they hope to make the airport at Chennai (formerly Madras) the first one in India to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, which assesses the extent to which a structure adheres to the principles of sustainable design.
