After more than 70 years, the Hearst Corporation headquarters building, located in the New York City borough of Manhattan, is finally getting its topping-out ceremony. The original six-story structure—the design of which included plans for adding up to nine stories as the Hearst publishing empire grew—was built in 1928. However, the Great Depression and then World War II postponed expansion plans, and the art deco building at 959 Eighth Avenue remained somewhat vertically challenged among surrounding high-rises. In 2001, however, the Hearst Corporation decided to consolidate the offices it rents for nearly 2,000 employees in and around New York City into a gleaming new 46-story tower.
