摘要

Hurricane Katrina was the most costly natural disaster in our nation's history. Excluding the New Orleans flooding, most of the damage resulted from storm surge inundation in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama rather than from high wind. The peak storm surge exceeded 25 ft (7.6 m) above sea level and occurred between Pass Christian and Biloxi, confirming computer model predictions made by Louisiana State University's Hurricane Center shortly before landfall. This level of surge is considerably greater than experieneed during other recent hurricanes of similar intensity, primarily because of the shallow coastal bathymetry, the shape of the coastline around the Mississippi River Delta, and the greater intensity of the storm prior to landfall.
