摘要

As more companies venture into African markets exporting South African engineering expertise and solutions, we need to remember the responsibilities of upholding the excellence and reputation of South African products (whether they be human resources or tangible products), especially in an industry rife with corruption and dishonesty. The label "from South Africa" takes on a new weightiness when we consider that we are not only representing ourselves and what we do, but also our country when we work outside our borders. We therefore should not forget the reputation we are creating for ourselves. Although we may feel isolated and overwhelmed in some assignments on the African continent, where the best laid plans sometimes do go awry, we must never forget the codes and standards to which we ascribe. Failure will certainly occur if we side-step standards and specifications, and compromise on quality by ignoring inspections and compliance, excusing these actions on the grounds that we find it difficult to operate in Africa. All our design solutions and construction must be performed to the best of our abilities. At no point must we stray from our integrity and ethics.
