Faced with the need to replace its aging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the City of Petaluma, California, is moving forward with the construction of a $110-million facility that will employ constructed wetlands designed not only to assist with the treatment process but also to provide wildlife habitat and open space. Designed by Carollo Engineers, of Walnut Creek, California, the Ellis Creek Water Recycling Plant is sized to treat an average dry-weather flow of 6.7 mgd (25,360 m~3/d) and an annual average flow of 8 mgd (30,280 m~3/d), says Michael Ban, P.E., the director of Petaluma's Department of Water Resources and Conservation.
