Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) have approved an unusual configuration for a congested interchange in Kansas City. Known as a diverging diamond interchange (DDI), the configuration includes crossing the east- and westbound lanes and directing vehicles to the left side of the road. MODOT planners believe that this configuration will reduce congestion and minimize construction costs without disturbing the existing highway overpass, which was rehabilitated only eight years ago. Although the configuration has been used in Europe, this is its debut in the United States.
