Since the 1930s Louisiana's coastal wetlands have shrunk by 1.2 million acres (485,628 ha) as a result of human and natural factors. Although efforts have been made to counteract the decline, the state continues to lose approximately 16,000 acres (6,475 ha) of coastal marshland each year, areas that provide important habitat for a wide range of wildlife and shield critical facets of infrastructure from storm damage. Faced with the possible loss of significantly more of these wetlands, several federal agencies and the State of Louisiana have jointly developed a response. In November the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources released an ambitious plan (Louisiana Coastal Area Ecosystem Restoration Study) that calls for a number of major restoration projects as well as a research program aimed at developing new methods for addressing the loss of coastal wedands.
