Seeking to make the most of their water supplies, a number of municipalities have implemented desalination to treat brackish groundwater or other sources previously considered too salty for drinking. However, in many cases the high costs associated with disposing of the highly saline concentrate left over from the treatment process make this approach impractical or limit the extent to which it can be employed. To help address this problem, the Awwa Research Foundation (AWWARF), of Denver, and the California Energy Commission are jointly sponsoring research intended to develop cost-effective methods that municipalities can use to eliminate discharges of concentrate. The approach being investigated is known as zero liquid discharge (ZLD).
