Despite the problems plaguing the airline industry, airports around the country are faced with the need to expand to accommodate the millions of travelers passing through their gates every day. Arizona's Tucson International Airport is the latest to complete an expansion project, this one nearly doubling its capacity. The 82,000 sq ft (7,618 m~2) project, led by hntb Architecture, of Kansas City, Missouri, proceeded in two phases and presented a number of challenges to architects and engineers. The first phase of the $65-million project relocated the airport's rental car companies to a new facility east of the terminal. A parking and car storage structure also was constructed. Once that work, along with minor road improvements, was completed, the main expansion could proceed.
