摘要

An extremely ductile concrete made with engineered cement composites (eccs), a concrete developed at the University of Michigan that holds promise for cutting costs, has been used on a large scale for the first time. The application was in the deck of the Mihara Bridge, a cable-stayed vehicular crossing in Hokkaido, Japan, that was opened to traffic in April. Designed to be nearly as ductile as steel, the flexible concrete will, it is hoped, be less susceptible to cracks and thus confer savings in the area of maintenance. The ecc concrete was pioneered by Victor Li, Ph.D., a professor of civil and environmental engineering and materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan. He has been developing the material for several years in an effort to create a concrete that by being more durable and longer lasting can offer economic advantages. The ecc material typically uses far less steel reinforcement than traditional concrete, and in some applications, Li says, it uses none, instead employing very small polyvinyl alcohol (pva) fibers embedded within the concrete to impart tensile ductility. The material has a compressive strength similar to that of high-strength concrete, about 70 MPa.
