Thesizeand shape of a new soccerstadiuminTianjin, China, will enablethe region to host international as well as local competitions, including games that will form part of the 2008 Olympics. In addition to its suspended roof and sleek steel exterior, the stadium features triangular arched trusses that stand on end behind and above the seating areasto support the roof. Boasting a high-tech appearance and an innovative cable-supported roof structure, a new soccer (or, as it's referred to in the rest of the world, football) stadium constructed for the Tianjin (Tientsin) Economic Development Area, or teda, in China, opened on May 15, 2004, amid much fanfare. The teda stadium is one of the first in China to have a field sized to meet the standards set by the Federation Internationale de Football Association, better known as FIFA, for its World Cup competition as well as the standards set by the International Olympic Committee. As such, the facility is being considered for early-round matches for the Beijing Olympics, in 2008.
