The U.S. Department of Energy (doe) intends to remove more than 10 million tons (9.1 million Mg) of uranium mill tailings from a site along the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. In its final environmental impact statement (FEIS) for the project, released' on July 25, the doe indicated that its preferred alternative is a plan—expected to cost $472 million—that will transfer the tailings by rail to a disposal site 30 mi (48 km) away and install a system for remediating groundwater at the Moab site.
