Since 1998, farmers in the valley of California's Salinas River have been using highly treated wastewater to irrigate their fields as seawater seeps inland, contaminating the state's diminishing groundwater sources as demand for potable water continues unabated. But the treatment process is slow, and farmers' needs often outpace the available supply of treated wastewater. Now a professor at the University of California at Berkeley may have found a way to accelerate the process. Kara Nelson, Ph.D., a professor of civil and environmental engineering, is conducting research to determine whether the rate at which wastewater is treated can be increased without undermining the process or compromising safety.
