摘要

In 1960 the Aral Sea was larger than Lake Huron, sprawling across the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which at that time were part of the Soviet Union. Two rivers, the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, fed the sea. But Soviet policy dictated that large quantities of water be diverted from the rivers for irrigation. Deprived of that water, the Aral Sea began to shrink. By the mid-1990s, the sea's surface area had declined by more than 50 percent, from 67,000 km~2 to 30,000 km~2. The sea―once the fourth-largest freshwater body in the world―is now only a fraction of its former size. In fact, the receding waters have effectively split the sea into two bodies of water: a larger, southern sea and a smaller, northern sea, connected by a narrow strait.
