During much of its construction, the Sage Gateshead music center stood as a complex of three concrete structures on the banks of the river Tyne in Gateshead, United Kingdom. But as work on the center approaches completion, the concrete buildings are hardly visible, having been swallowed by a massive curved roof of steel and glass about 60 m wide and 100 m long. Gateshead―an industrial center across the Tyne from Newcastle―has undergone an architectural rejuvenation in recent years. In 2001 the Gateshead Millennium Bridge opened to much fanfare as a highly stylized drawbridge that rises by tilting laterally. When London-based Foster and Partners earned the commission to design the Sage Gateshead just downstream, it set itself the task of creating an economical and acoustically sophisticated complex of equal verve.
