摘要

Although no one knows precisely why Jamaica Bay―an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean near New York City occupying more than 10,000 acres (4,047 ha)―is losing expanses of wetlands each year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers isn't waiting for an answer before proceeding with projects intended to stem the loss, if only temporarily. Corps engineers are in the design phase of one of many short-term erosion remediation projects―in this case involving Gerritsen Creek, one of the many waterways that figure in the bay's wetlands. The beaches, woodlands, and wetlands along the coasts of the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens that form part of the bay are home to many endangered and rare birds. Marshes of this size adjacent to a major metropolitan area are fairly rare in the United States. Researchers first noticed alarming rates of marsh loss in the bay in 1995, and a study showed that between 1994 and 1999 about 44 acres (17.8 ha) of marshland disappeared each year.
