As part of an ambitious effort to address the problem of elevated levels of lead in its drinking water, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) intends to replace all of the city's lead service lines located in public space by 2010. Announced by WASA'S board of directors on July 1, the program is expected to entail the replacement of an estimated 23,000 lead service lines at a cost of approximately $350 million.
