Since realizing over the course of the past decade that it has been steadily depleting the aquifer that provides all of its drinking water, the City of Albuquerque has succeeded in reducing the amount of water used by its residents. But to help stabilize the aquifer and ensure sufficient water resources in the future, the city has pursued plans to augment its groundwater supply by diverting and treating surface water. Those plans came a step closer to reality in early August, when the city broke ground at the site of a 92 mgd (348,000 m~3/d) water treatment plant.
