Located in one of the most industri-alized regions of the United States, the Grand Calumet River in northwestern Indiana has to contend with the numerous affronts common to many urban rivers. Most of the river's flow consists of effuent from municipal or industrial wastewater treatment plants, and combined sewer overflows introduce billions of gallons of untreated sewage into the river each year. Storm-water runoff from industrial sites and urban areas contributes a variety of pol-lutants, as does the region's heavily con-taminated groundwater. Although much of this pollution eventually flows out of the river into Lake Michigan, significant amounts remain trapped in the Grand Calumet itself, accumulating in the river's sediment and posing a serious environmental threat. However, a recent agreement involving the federal govern-merit, the State of Indiana, and eight companies provides an impetus for efforts to restore portions of this badly degraded waterway.
