Stretching for more than 1.5 mi (2.4 km) along San Francisco Bay, Crissy Field encompasses more than 100 acres (40 ha) of priceless waterfront real estate between the San Francisco Marina to the east and Fort Point, at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, to the west. Part of the former military installation known as the Presidio, Crissy Field was a grass airstrip used by the U.S. Army in its early efforts to develop and test airplanes, and the facility has been designated a national historic landmark by the National Park Service. As part of the largest waterfront project ever undertaken by the National Park Service, Crissy Field has been transformed from a military airfield and industrial storage yard replete with abandoned buildings, crumbling asphalt, chain-link fences, and rubble into a magnificent urban park. The 20 acres (8 ha) of tidal salt marsh, a smaller version of the vast marsh that once occupied the site, form the centerpiece of the project. Filled with sand so that the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition could be constructed there in 1915, the location later served as the airfield's runway. The restoration effort, completed by a team led by the San Francisco-based landscape architecture and planning firm Hargreaves Associates, also entailed restoring beach and shoreline areas and dunes, among other features. Hargreaves Associates served as the primary planning and design firm for the Crissy Field restoration.
