Underground societies, illegal advertising, unethical bidding, rebellious overhauls, and environment-conscious activity have all played a role in shaping the ASCE Code of Ethics into what you see today. As ASCE celebrates its 150th anniversary, this paper will take a unique look at several important dates that have contributed to the code's existence. This allows for a better understanding of the engineer's influence on society, as well as society's influences on the engineer throughout the past 150 years. The paper will begin by showing how ASCE evolved from seeing no need for a code of ethics to the case today, where the first fundamental canon in the code states, "Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties" (ASCE 2002, 13). The paper will then move through several distinct eras: before the code was implemented, its first draft in 1914, the bidding dilemma of 1961, the 1976 overhaul, and, finally, the most recent amendment, in 1996.
