摘要

An earthquake originating from the Wasatch Fault, in north central Utah, has the potential to topple one of the state's most treasured buildings―its capitol. To protect the historic structure, the Utah State Capitol Preservation Board has undertaken a $200-million renovation that includes a comprehensive seismic retrofit. According to the Utah Geological Survey, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 to 7.5 occurs along the Wasatch Fault approximately every 350 years. The capitol, which lies less than 1 mi (1.6 km) from the fault, has serious shortcomings in its ability to withstand such a large temblor, says Jerod Johnson, a structural engineer for Reaveley Engineers & Associates, Inc., of Salt Lake City, which is performing the structural engineering for the retrofit.
