Whether the goal is to locate every tower along a power transmission line, or pinpoint where to start grading for a new highway, few things are more basic to the engineering profession than accurate surveying. Though the basics of the job—the distances and angles that enable the surveyor to identify locations—are well understood, a steady flow of innovations has brought new speed, accuracy, and ease of use to the field. The familiar total station is still the backbone of surveying, but it's sharing the toolbox these days with some productive new options.
