The rate of wetland loss in Louisiana is staggering. More than 25 sq mi (65 km~2) of marsh is lost each year in a state that contains 40 percent of all the coastal wetlands in the United States. The Mississippi River is so constrained by levees that the natural flooding and nutrient replenishment that once revitalized wetlands have ceased, and salt water from the Gulf of Mexico continues to creep inland. "What used to be freshwater now is brackish, what used to be brackish now is saline," says Charles Villarrubia, a project manager for the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Baton Rouge. The DNR predicts that at the going rate another 1,000 sq mi (2,590 km~2) of wetlands will be lost by 2050.
