Buried surfaces composed of materials such as concrete, carbon steel and ductile iron are vulnerable to corrosion by the soil that surrounds them. Protecting these widely used materials requires careful selection, based on the nature of the soil, of inhibitors, barrier coatings, cathodic protection and additives. Engineers may also consider corrosion-inhibiting construction methods.
