For the most recently constructed extension of San Diego Trolley's light-rail system, the end of the line is Qualcomm Stadium, a 70,000-seat stadium that hosted the 1998 Super Bowl. The $231 million extension, dubbed Mission Valley West, was designed by Boyle Engineering Corp., Newport Beach, Calif., and runs 6.1 mi between the stadium and the city's Old Town District. Mission Valley West was not a special undertaking for the Super Bowl, but it became important to complete the extension in time for the game. The project team was able to beat the initial January 1998 deadline by two months despite environmental, geotechnical and regulatory concerns.
