The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is doing its best to take the guesswork out of winter road maintenance operations by creating a tailored forecasting and weather condition reporting system. The department has made weather information continuously and instantaneously available through satellite communications to all the county road maintenance contractors who use the system. New technology, such as infrared pavement temperature sensors, has added to the system's database of weather information.
