You can't sit still. That seems to be the motto of successful consulting engineering firms, which are constantly looking for new markets for their services. Many are entering nontraditional fields; some are taking equity positions in projects, or thinking about it; others are offering broader civil engineering services. Walter P. Moore, Houston, is growing, and wants to continue. The firm has had revenues of about $8 million "for years," says Lee Slade, senior vice president, but this year, revenues should reach $18 million. The primary factors limiting growth, he thinks, are finding new clients and finding new staff: "In a climate where you have signing bonuses and young engineers who want time off or want to work at home, you have to motivate people to stay."
