The ESA has welcomed measures in the government's new strategy to prevent waste and improve recycling. It's not clear, however, that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has given serious thought to how to make the most of the residual waste that will be left over. The strategy mentions encouraging greater efficiency at existing plants, but shows little understanding of the challenges involved. There is also a complete lack of ambition in terms of diverting waste from landfill and for recovering energy domestically, rather than overseas.
