On 26 January, the Environment Agency consultation on its Strategic Review of Charges (SROC) closed. The Environment Agency's constitution means that it must recover its costs of regulation of permitted activity through its charges. HM Treasury rules mean that these charges need to be aligned with the actual levels of regulatory activity at different sites. The Agency carried out the SROC to ensure that its environmental permit charges were better aligned with actual regulatory costs incurred across different activities.
