摘要

The Hackney waste chutes were built into blocks of flats - thousands of which were built in the 1950s and 60s - to make it convenient for residents to dispose of their rubbish. At that time, households produced far less waste, as the Council explained: "Most groceries weren't pre-packaged, many glass bottles were reused and the waste that was produced was generally small and light. Now, however, the waste produced has increased in volume, there is more cardboard from online deliveries and this causes blockages in the chutes. Residents tend to dispose of their rubbish once or twice a week, meaning that large 60-litre bags don't fit inside the chute hoppers, which were designed for smaller bags and individual items."
