Can you put a price on nature, and the way an invigorating walk through a beautiful landscape can inspire you or lift your mood? According to Australian researchers, you can - and it's almost £5tn a year. After calculating the benefits of the world's national parks, economists from Griffith University, in Brisbane, concluded that the services they offer amount to a significant proportion of global gross domestic product (GDP). These savings not only include the avoided cost of mental health treatments, but also those incurred as a result of absenteeism or poor productivity and antisocial behaviour. And this is before you consider all the environmental - and ecosystem - services that nature offers, such as flood protection.
