In the event of a deal with the EU, the bill will come into effect at the end of the transition period - 31 December 2020 - but this can be extended to 31 December 2022. The government's intention was for the bill to be ready for the 2020 deadline, so that - in the event of a no-deal Brexit - there would have been as short a gap as possible between leaving the EU (currently on 31 January 2020) and the bill becoming an act of parliament. With the General Election, this is all a bit up in the air. The bill, generally, has cross-party support, and its second reading was on 28 October. Next up was the committee stage and more detailed scrutiny. The dissolution of parliament on 6 November, however, means the bill technically fails' and can make no further progress.
