Air quality issues have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, notably as a result of a number of successful challenges by ClientEarth, a non-government organisation, in relation to the Government's air quality plans and a ruling in 2014 by the European Court of Justice that the UK Government was in breach of the Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC (AQD). The AQD seeks to regulate certain pollutants present in the ambient air and requires member states to identify air quality zones and manage the ambient air quality by drawing up air quality plans (AQP] and measures to limit the amount of pollutants present.
