A £12m plant refurbishment and investment in new equipment from Tomra Sorting has helped boost material-recovery rates, and doubled capacity, at the Amgen Cymru Materials Recovery Centre. The Aberdare facility, which is the largest dry mixed recycling plant in Wales, is owned and operated by Amgen Cymru, the local authority waste disposal company owned by the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. It reopened in November 2019 after the large-scale refurbishment project was completed. Amgen Cymru appointed Blue Group to redesign the plant and manage the project, which included the installation of seven auto-sort units. These combine near-infrared and visual spectrometers to accurately and quickly recognise and separate items according to their material type and colour, extracting high-purity high-value end fractions.
