I started as an apprentice mechanic, working at Vine street workshops at Kirklees Council in Huddersfield. I also spent some time at Calderdale, managing the workshops there, before moving to the private sector. My career progressed very rapidly at Biffa. I started as regional fleet engineer and was continually promoted to head up a large element of that business as it grew from a regional player to the largest and most successful waste management business in the UK. It culminated in a position on the board as fleet and pre-treatment director. Changes that were needed include: getting the was recycling; upping the image of collection and landfill companies; making IT integral to the business; and investing in people. They're all things we take for granted nowadays. My highlights include the promotions at an early age: being made workshops supervisor while barely out of my apprenticeship at Kirklees; and heading up and creating the fleet department, which became an important part of the Biffa growth story - and having the best team in the business behind me. Also, setting up NRG in 2006 and taking over Riverside and DTM to become one of the largest, and most successful, fleet management companies in the UK. Most of all, I enjoy being part of, and creating, a successful and energised management team.
