Landfill Tax has been part of the waste and environment landscape for over two decades, since its introduction in October 1996 as a disincentive to landfilling material and to encourage a move to more sustainable alternatives. Whether you consider Landfill Tax to be a sham environmental tax, or the sole reason we have diverted so much waste from landfill and met our Landfill Directive targets, there can be little doubt that it has achieved its financial and environmental objectives. Since the introduction of the tax in the UK, landfilling is down by 60 percent and, in 2014 alone, Landfill Tax revenue stood at £1.1bn.
