摘要

With the news that Tim Peake, a former Apache Helicopter pilot, is now part of the current crew of the International Space Station, making him the first British astronaut to visit the platform and also the first UK astronaut in space for over 20 years, brings space travel back into the UK's public perspective. However, as the 2013 film Gravity (see Plate 1) has shown, there are many risks to space travel and particularly those caused by space waste - but what is it? Space waste makes us think of old spy satellites or space stations - relics of the Cold War "space race" orbiting the earth like a slow passing of the Mary Celeste. However, the truth is far from that, rather the waste is a lethal bullet of material ranging from the size of a coin to that of a van, with even the smallest particles reaching speeds of five miles per second (Some 18,000 miles per hour) or, in other words, seven times the speed of a bullet, the impact of which for something the size of an acorn could deliver the same force of a bowling ball travelling at 300 miles per hour (NASA, 2010).
