As a Government, we have long been committed to ambitious action on recycling and waste management. Wales has the fourth best recycling rate in Europe and figures released in December show it again leads the rest of the UK in terms of recycling. In the four years since the UK recycling rates have been collected by Defra, Welsh homes have improved household recycling from 44 percent to nearly 55 percent, nearly 10 percentage points higher than the UK average. Recycling remains a priority for Wales and we will soon raise our municipal waste recycling targets again to meet our ambitious goal of recycling at least 70 percent of our waste by 2025 and 100 percent by 2050. These targets are set out in "Towards Zero Waste", which is our overarching strategy for waste. Published in 2010, the strategy sets out how we have been, and will continue to, manage waste in Wales to produce benefits not only for the environment, but also for our economy and social wellbeing. It outlines the actions we must all take if we are to be a zero waste nation by 2050.
