I attended the London and Southern Counties Christmas lunch in December, with over 1,100 guests enjoying the run-up to Christmas. One of the speakers, the Deputy Mayor of London, Environment and Energy, Matthew Pencharz, made a short presentation during which he took a quick poll of the audience to see who was in favour of weight-based recycling targets, as opposed to carbon-based targets. Nearly everyone raised their hands in support of a carbon-based approach, surmising that this was probably a more progressive innovative way forward. 1 sheepishly kept my hand down for weight-based targets, thinking that it wouldn't go down well, the CIWM President being the only person advocating the status quo.
