A lack of political leadership is putting at risk the UK's ability to reach the European Commission's target of recycling 50 percent of local authority waste by 2020, according to the Environmental Services Association, following the release of Defra's 2014 waste statistics. Published in December, the UK Statistics on Waste revealed that the UK recycling rate of "waste from households" reached 44.9 percent in 2014, rising from 44.1 percent in 2013. Responding, the ESA's executive director, Jacob Hayler said: "The latest Defra figures on household waste recycling show that the UK is by no means certain to reach the EU's 50 percent target by 2020.
