There is a scene in the middle of Phillip Noyce's film, "Dead Calm", where Sam Neill sets fire to Billy Zane's psychopathic party boat in order to allow Nicole Kidman to set a bearing for his rescue, whilst she keeps the drugged Zane tied up in their bedroom. It's quite a film if you haven't seen it. In achieving her record-breaking 27,000 mile journey across the high seas, Dame Ellen MacArthur sent up a similar beacon from her boat, albeit a metaphorical one. Circumnavigating the globe with only her boat providing heat, shelter and food, she realised quite viscerally how finite not only her resources were, but also how finite the world's resources are. So began her Foundation's quest for the circular economy.
